OUR BEGINNINGS WERE SIMPLE
I grew up at the end of the “golden age of radio” in the 1950’s and was always fascinated by radio and electronics. I eventually became an electrical engineer and drifted into the computer and software industry but maintained my interest.
Fast Forward Many Years: When I met my wife, Jane, some 20 years ago, she and her mother were avid antiquers and, being a good husband would drive them on their weekend treks. One day, Jane saw me standing in the middle of the store with a bored expression and suggested that it might be fun to get an old radio and see if I could get it working again. She was right: It was fun, and I’ve been doing it ever since.
At first, I just did for my own radios, keeping some and selling others on eBay and local radio shows (yes there are such things — check out the New England Antique Radio Club at www.nearc.net). Later, when friends found out what I was doing, it seemed everyone had an old radio or phonograph that a relative had left them and wouldn’t it be great to have it working again.
Suddenly a had a nice little part-time business! Now it’s many years later, and I am semi-retired from the software business and restoring antique radios, photographs, as well as vintage car radios and Hi-Fi equipment for people throughout New England. Of course, radio stations are not what they used to be so many radios get a Bluetooth “upgrade” to give them a new useful life.
